Statement of Significance

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The A H Cunningham Memorial Hall and Library was built as part of the Cheetham Saltworks in the 1920s and was originally designed as a recreation hall for company employees with a library added later. It was dedicated to the memory of two members of the Cunningham family who together with the Cheetham family owned, managed and developed the company. It is a double hipped tiled roof red brick building with terracotta decorative elements.

The A H Cunningham Memorial Hall and Library has historic and social value to the Newcomb and Moolap communities of the surrounding region.

The A H Cunningham Memorial Hall and Library is part of the Cheetham Saltworks complex and an integral part of the social and industrial history of Moolap. It is relatively intact with original materials, roof form and finish and doors and windows. It makes a significant contribution to interpretation of the Cheeetham Saltworks as a place of work. The Saltworks was one of the largest employers on the Bellarine Peninsula.

It is of LOCAL cultural signficance.
