Statement of Significance

LOCAL SIGNIFICANCE - C LISTED

The house at 1 Margate Street is aesthetically significant at a LOCAL level. Although relocated, altered and extended, this house still demonstrates some original design qualities of a Victorian style. These qualities include the hipped roof form and a concave verandah which projects towards the street frontage. Other intact qualities include the horizontal weatherboard wall cladding, and the timber and glazed front door with side lights. The timber picket fence and substantial pine tree contribute to the significance of the place.

The house also makes a significant contribution to the single storey, pitched roof residential streetscape. The house at 1 Margate Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the Flinders Estate subdivision of 1887 and the later Barwon Heads Estate Company Limited subdivision of 1901.
