It is also potentially useful for collection of propagation material and is recommended for classification at the Regional level.
Why is it significant?
‘The Grandmother Tree’ has been estimated at 350 years old, and is a very large example of a remnant Yellow Box in a landscape that has seen significant alteration since colonisation. Land use in this area of the goldfields since the 1840s includes land clearing for mining activities, sheep grazing, market gardening and more recently dairy cattle were run near the site.
This tree has a significant contribution to the landscape character, is a rare example this this species in the area, likely pre-exists settlement, and provides important habitat to native species.
