STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

'Aringa' (formerly known as 'Amanda Villa') was erected 1854-57 as a 5 room colonial Georgian house for George Southey, a noted Geelong publican. The architects were Woolgrove & Bone, a little known Geelong firm. 'Aringa' has been substantially altered and extended and the original verandah replaced. The property has interesting early historical associations with George Southey but little architectural interest.

Geelong Advertiser - 3rd November, 1854, p5 - Tendernoticed called by Woolgrove & Bone, architects foir a villa 2 miles from Geelong for Mr Southey. This tender may not have been accepted as another was called on 3rd May, 1856 with plans and specifications at Southey's Hotel.

18th August, 1856 p. 3 - Tender for completion of James Patterson's contract for a stone house,

Barrabool Hills for Mr George Southey.

8th November, 1968 - To let notice, 5 rooms.

8th December, 1875 - For sale notice with description given.

22nd December, 1875 - Sold to Mrs S McCracken for 250 pounds.
