Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The area is first mapped in the 1857 Revised Plan of Block I, G and N. The site is the likely location of John Alloo’s Chinese Restaurant and Boarding House, that occupied the site from 1854 until 1857. Alloo likely sold the premises to his business partner Chen Chon Ci in 1857. The site was likely sold and developed in the 1860s and a commercial premises. The site has -1m of fill on the Ballarat DEM, however any deposit associated with the initial Chinese occupation of the site would be highly significant. 
How is it significant?
The site is of historical and archaeological significance. 
Why is it significant?
The site is of historical significance as the location of one of the first Chinese establishments on the gold fields. The site is associated with John Alloo, a significant Chinese figure in the Victorian Gold Rush. The site is of archaeological significance due to its potential to contain artefacts, deposits and features that relate to the establishment of commercial operations in the gold rush, and later 19th-century activities.
