Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The Steel Gully Ruin represents potential early mining occupation on the outer boundary of Chewton. site comprises a sandstone and mortar ruin, with potential subsurface features extending beyond the ruin. The site is likely to contain subsurface deposits.

How is it significant?
The site is of archaeological and local historical significance. 
Why is it significant?
The site is of historical significance for its association with the development of Steels and Butchers Gully in the early 1850, in addition to 1860s land sales in the Parish of Castlemaine and Township of Chewton. The site has the potential to contain subsurface archaeological features, deposits and artefacts associated with the occupation of the site as well as mining relics.
