Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The Former Gowar Township Archaeological Site has the potential to contain early mining occupation of Muckleford North and on route from Castlemaine to Maldon. The diggings were not rich, but business established enough that land was surveyed and sold in 1859. The site is within an open paddock and site comprises European plantings and the ruin of the Half-way Hotel to the west of the site. The site is likely to contain archaeological features, subsurface deposits and artefacts associated with the occupation and development of the township.

The site is of archaeological and local historical significance. 
Why is it significant?
The site is of historical significance for its association with the development of the Gowar Township in the early 1850, and the wider Mount Alexander gold field. The site has the potential to contain subsurface archaeological features, deposits and artefacts associated with the occupation of the site as well as mining relics.
