Statement of Significance

What is significant?
This property has a remnant bluestone building likely with 2 separate rooms and a privy, although there are no contemporary accounts or plans showing the layout of these structures. There is a large industrial building to the rear of the stone building with a new road on the south boundary of the site. These works have significantly impacted the landscape of the subject site and views to the historic remains. The ruins are at risk of full collapse. Given the quality of the stonework and the size of the rooms, the home was likely well designed and for a family of at least moderate wealth. It is likely that the site contains intact archaeological deposits which would improve our understanding of how the house was occupied.
How is it significant?
The site has association with late 19th century spread of settlement. The site has the potential to provide insight into mid to late 19th century daily life on a farm in the early years of farming development in the area. The archaeological remains may contribute knowledge not currently visible or understood as the site appears relatively undisturbed.
Why is it significant?
David Canty was a prominent and important local figure not just within Ararat but also in Stawell where he had a more considerable estate.
