How is it significant?
This Box Elder is significant for scientific, landscape and historic reasons at the State level.
Why is it significant?
The Box Elder is scientifically significant for its unusually large size. The tree is also significant for its contribution to the landscape as it creates a nice setting and is visually spectacular when in flower. The tree has historic significance as it is a part of a collection in the historic Warrnambool Botanic Gardens. Laurence McPhee removed the ‘3-leafed clover’ bed near the fernery when planting this Box Elder. At 63 years of age, this is a significant tree in its space and has a connection to the curator period of the Gardens.
