Statement of Significance

What is significant?
An individual Dutch Elm located in the Warrnambool Botanic Gardens, close to the centre of the gardens.
How is it significant?
The Dutch Elm is significant for scientific, landscape and historic reasons at the State level.
Why is it significant?
This Dutch Elm is scientifically significant for its outstanding large size including the wide branching habit/spreading limbs. The tree is significant for its contribution to the landscape especially with the large shade providing canopy. This Dutch Elm is also significant for historic reasons, not only for being planted during the Scoborio/Guilfoyle era in the historic Warrnambool Botanic Gardens but also because of its arboricultural (signs of past arboricultural practices like the bolting and cabling) and community history. In 1980 the tree developed a serious split and was in danger of collapsing. There was a community campaign to save this tree and money was provided to secure the branches with rods and cables. This expensive exercise, undertaken in 1981 and supported by the Rotary Club, led to the Elm being known as the Money Tree. After the tree was pruned some of the wood was repurposed by the community for items of furniture and for use in the Performing Arts Centre.
