Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The site contains the mapped location of three historical residences and a large bakery on the corner of Dover Street, Cremorne. This site fronts Cubitt Street, Cremorne and currently comprises a gravelled single-storey car park, and a demolished house to the north of the site. Some fragments of brick and bluestone are visible through the gravelled surface. There is less evidence of earlier occupation on the site, as this part of Dover Street (formerly Barney Street) is vacant in 1850s plans. It should be noted that Barney Street had such a notorious reputation that Richmond Council changed the street name in 1866.
How is it significant?
The site is of historical and archaeological significance.
Why is it significant?
The site is of historical significance as the location of a hotel in Cremorne. The earlier occupation of the site is significance for its association with the development of Richmond and the City of Yarra. The site is of archaeological significance due to its potential to contain artefacts, deposits and features that relate to the establishment and operation of the residence and later 19th century hotel and commercial activities.
