What is significant?
This Horse Chestnut grows in Daylesford Botanic Gardens (also known as Wombat Hill Botanic Gardens), a site of State significance listed in the Victorian Heritage Register (H2202). This specimen is included in the statement of significance.
How is it significant?
This Horse Chestnut is significant for scientific, social, historic and aesthetic reasons at the State level.
Why is it significant?
This is largest and most grand Horse Chestnut in the state. There are no other specimens of Aesculus hippocastanum in the register (a hybrid variety, A. x carnea, is recorded in Bendigo [T11379]). It is scientifically, socially and aesthetically significant for its size, contribution to the landscape, and as an exceptional example of the species. It is historically significant for its associations with Daylesford Botanic Gardens, an outstanding Victorian-era formal garden, and its associations with noted landscape designer William Sangster.
