Statement of Significance

Glencairne homestead is of archaeological significance as an early squatter residence, associated with prominent pastoralist George Coghill, who was associated with the Fawkner Land Company transactions in the immediate area. The site has moderate-high potential for intact archaeological deposits associated with its occupation from the 1840s to probably the end of the nineteenth century.

Remaining features including collapsed walls, building rubble a possible cellar and cistern suggest potential for investigating both the spatial arrangement and construction methods of early rural residences, and also chronologically defined artefact assemblages unlikely to be impacted by more recent use or deposition.

The historical association of the place with an important Victorian pioneer settler who was partner with John Pascoe Fawkner in one of the first private attempts to provide small holdings for farmers is also notable. The place is a significant historical site for the local area and within the City of Hume.
