Statement of Significance

The Collingwood Sawmill and Timber yard site is considered to be of local significance for its evidence of early industry now absent from the Melbourne CBD and inner city and for evidence nineteenth century industrial processes. The site also represents the remains of a business that spanned Victoria’s gold rush years and continued to operate through to the end of the twentieth century. It appears to have been a large and successful business complex.

The site may also be considered to hold some significance for its association with the operations of the Salvation Army printing works (which was part of a larger complex of Salvation Army holdings), but does not appear to have acted as a significant centre of worship, training or organisation.
