Statement of Significance
The Gambetta mine comprises evidence of a former reef mining venture including mullock heaps, shafts, building platforms, tracks, drains and scatters of artefacts. The Gambetta mine is of historical and scientific significance at the local level. The Gambetta mine is of historical significance as evidence of former reef mining activity in the Omeo area, and as one of the later mines to operate. It is historically important for its role in continuing mining traditions after the alluvial mining had petered out and hydraulic sluicing was banned. The site is of scientific significance for its potential to reveal further information through archaeological investigation.
