Statement of Significance

A 1942 map of Hawkesdale produced by the Australian Section, Imperial General Staff (SLV) shows a ‘ruin’ in this location, and there are clearly sub-surface remains of some type of structure or feature remaining in situ. There are also dressed bluestone blocks and brick on the surface. Given the notation on the 1942 map the deposit is more than 75 years old and thus meets the definition of an archaeological site or place. There is also brick and metal visible. As such the Ruin may provide information of past activity in the local area and potentially the State, however, archaeological methods to reveal information about the settlement, development or use of the place as there has beens no other documentary information found on the Ruin at this location to date.
