What is significant?

A large, mature Fraxinus excelsior 'Aurea' (Golden Ash) located at Burnham Beeches in Sherbrooke.

How is it significant?

This Fraxinus excelsior 'Aurea' (Golden Ash) is significant for social, scientific and historic reasons at Regional level.

Why is it significant?

This Fraxinus excelsior 'Aurea' (Golden Ash) is a large, mature tree that is in overall good health despite a large crack in one of the branches. It is outstanding for its height at 19m, which is particularly tall for a Golden Ash. Another known example of the species occurs at Queens Park in Moonee Ponds. This tree is located next to a Quercus rubra (Red Oak), also included in the register (T12386). It is noted that this Golden Ash is slightly loop sided, likely due to being located so close to this Red Oak. Both trees make a contribution to the surrounding landscape of this historic property. Other significant trees at the property include a row and two stands of Fagus sylvatica (European Beech) alongside the Sherbrooke Road entrance to Burnham Beeches (T12208); a Thuja occidentalis (White Cedar) (T11131) and a Tilia tomentosa (Silver Linden) located in the garden around the Mansion.
