STATEMENT OF CULTURAL HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE

What is significant?

A rare Olearia paniculata (Akiraho) located in the Camperdown Botanic Gardens. The tree is multi-trunked, measuring 1.5m, 1.1 and .8m each. It is a very large specimen in excellent condition, even though it is located in a very exposed and windy part of the site.

How is it significant?

The Olearia paniculata (Akiraho) is significant for rarity, scientific, historic, social and aesthetic reasons at State level.

Why is it significant?

Olearia paniculata (Akiraho) is unusual in cultivation in Victoria, with no other examples classified at time of registration. Other known examples occur at Glenormiston, Colac and Buninyong Botanic Gardens, although this is a much larger tree. It is significant for its size and spread of its trunks (1.5m, 1.1 and .8m each) spreading between 15 and 16m. An early planting in the gardens, likely to have been planted by Daniel Bunce or William Guilfoyle. It makes a significant contribution to the landscape of this historic botanic garden. Among the local community it is one of the most well-known and well-loved trees in the Camperdown Botanic Gardens. Generations of children have enjoyed climbing this tree.
