STATEMENT OF CULTURAL HERITAGE SIGNIFICANCE

What is significant?

A large Ulmus pumila var. pumila (Siberian Elm) street tree growing on the east side nature strip beside Barracks Walk, Bendigo. The tall crown and slightly weeping canopy is a prominent landscape feature. The Siberian Elm is a single trunked tree with 2 main structural branches. It is a tall narrow crowned tree with sightly pendulous fine branches. The leaves are glossy, narrow pointed and smooth. The trunk is covered in numerous water shoots. There is minor dieback in the crown top.

How is it significant?

The Ulmus pumila ar. Pumila (Siberian Elm) is significant for its aesthetic, size and rarity reasons at a State level.

Why is it significant?

Ulmus pumila var. pumila (Siberian Elm)is rare and this tree is the largest and only known mature tree in Victoria. It makes a contribution to the surrounding streetscape of Barnard Street, Bendigo.
