Statement of Significance

This Quercus rubra (Red Oak) is a large, mature tree that is in good health with fair structure and a long useful life expectancy. It is outstanding for its size at 25m height, 16m canopy spread and 1m circumference. The species is native to North America and is uncommon in cultivation in Victoria, especially when compared to the Pin Oak, a similar species which is widely planted. There is another known example of the species growing at the south entrance to Beechworth. This tree is located next to a Fraxinus excelsior 'Aurea' (Golden Ash), also included in the register (T12387). Both trees make a contribution to the surrounding landscape of this historic property. Other significant trees at the property include a row and two stands of Fagus sylvatica (European Beech) alongside the Sherbrooke Road entrance to Burnham Beeches (T12208); a Thuja occidentalis (White Cedar) (T11131) and a Tilia tomentosa (Silver Linden) located in the garden around the Mansion.
