What is Significant? The Electrical Substation, located in Elm Grove, Brunswick, is significant. How is it Significant? The Electrical Substation , located in Elm Grove, Brunswick is of
historic significance. Why is it Significant? The substation is of historic significance for its associations with
the development of Brunswick's electricity supply and in particular
the expansion of the network to cater for increased demand due to the
growth in manufacturing and other forms of industry in Brunswick
during the interwar period. (Criterion A) This substation is representative of the substations erected by the
Brunswick Electricity Supply during the interwar period and shares
characteristic details such as the louvred roof vent, as well as
decorative brickwork. It is notable as perhaps the first example of
the larger, double height substations required to meet increasing
electricity demand, which were designed with sheer, parapeted walls
that enabled them to be built on small sites hard against surrounding
buildings. (Criterion D)
