Why is it significant?
The house displays the principal characteristics of the terraced type
of housing and is distinguished by the high quality lacework and
elaborate vine wrapped posts to the cast-iron verandah. The intact
facade includes a tall decorative parapet that retains its
balustrading and moulded pilasters, as well as high quality cast-iron
work, arched and double-hung sash windows, and entrance door with
decorative glazing to sidelights and highlight. The front facade
appears intact from the public realm on Sutherland Road, and two
visible chimneys retain unpainted cement render finish with cornice
mouldings. (Criterion E)
The Italianate terrace house at 30 Sutherland Road, Armadale, to
the extent of its nineteenth century form and fabric, is significant.
The detached terrace house (originally built as a pair) at 30
Sutherland Road was erected in 1890 for Ellen S. Buckland.
The house at 30 Sutherland Road, Armadale is of local
architectural and aesthetic significance to the City of Stonington.
The terrace house at 30 Sutherland Road, Armadale is a fine and
highly intact representative example of a substantial Victorian
Italianate detached terrace residence. (Criterion D)
