The Haimes Memorial Houses were erected in 1895-96 as cottage accommodation for aged women, following receipt of a bequest from the estate of Capt. John Haimes, pastoralists of "Mamre" near Colac to the Ladies Benevolent Association in Geelong. Tombs and Durran, Architects, win and architectural competition and their design featuring cottage rows extending along the McKillop and Bellarine Street frontages is in the Queen Anne style, popular a this time. The corner octagonal tower, timber gables, terra cotta roof and contrasting brickwork, are distinctive elements. The cottages are notable examples of their work and an important Geelong institution.
