STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The house at 18 McKillop Street, Geelong, has significance as a predominantly externally intact example of the Edwardian style. Built in 1908-09 by J.C. Taylor and Sons, builders, the house appears to be in good condition when viewed from the street.
The house at 18 McKillop Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of the Edwardian style. These qualities include the recessed hipped roof form, together with the gable roof and hipped verandah that project towards the street frontage. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height, horizontal weatherboard wall cladding, galvanised corrugated steel roof cladding, three strapped, unpainted brick and multi-corbelled chimneys with terra cotta pots, modest eaves, turned timber verandah columns, curvilinear gable fretwork with central Art Nouveau stylised tulip fretwork, broad timber Art Nouveau arch with fretwork under upper timber gable decoration, decorative timber fretwork verandah valance, timber framed double hung window, timber framed doorway, gable bargeboards and the gable infill (brackets and projecting triangular mouldings). The front timber picket fence also contributes to the significance of the place.
The house at 18 McKillop Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Geelong in the early 20th century. In particular, the house has associations with J.C. Taylor and Sons, Builders, who built it in 1908-09.
Overall, the house at 18 McKillop Street is of LOCAL significance.
