B Listed - Regional Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The former Bell and Son bakery was most probably erected in 1860 for
Thomas Bell to a modest conservative classical design by Geelong
Architect Christopher Porter. This stuccoed masonry building with
disciplined classically derived facade, parapet and fenestration is
most notable for the timber shop fronts which are preserved intact.
The establishment is representative of a popular style freely adopted
for commercial premises in Victorian towns in the 1860's and of which
relatively few examples survive unaltered in the Geelong region.
