STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
"Wellwood Terrace" of six two storey terrace houses with
cast iron balcony verandahs and dichromatic brickwork was erected in
1887 for retired Goulburn Valley investor J. Wellwood. Upon his death,
the executors completed the terrace adding two more units to that
originally proposed. Joseph Watts, architect designed this terrace in
a substantial boom style classicism mode typical of inner suburban
Melbourne in the late 1880s, but rarely seen in Geelong, to meet the
demand for comfortable houses close to the town centre. The situation
and ornate cast iron verandah and palisade fence are notable features.
