"Golden Age", Hotel including interior - Now The Max

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The Golden Age Hotel, a three storey brick building on bluestone foundations with extensive cellars, was erected in 1854 for the licencees Ryan and Nailing. The Golden Age Hotel is an outstanding example of the work of John Young, a pioneer Geelong architect whose innovative designs and original brickwork details clearly define his work from contemporary nineteenth century architectural traditions. The Golden Age Hotel has been integrally associated with the social history of Geelong since 1854 and was an important meeting place in the early years of settlement on the Corio Bay.

Subsequent Works/Alterations/Additions

Architects, Alexander Davidson and co. called for tenders for additions and alterations in 1881. A fire escape has been added to the rear and bathrooms at ground floor level. The interior has been re-modelled.
