STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The gate at 54 Eastern Beach has significance as a legacy of the original frontage to the two storey villa at 2 Fitzroy Street built in 1883-84 to a design by the Geelong architects Watts and Jackson for John Longville Price, original owner, solicitor and former Mayor.

The gate at 54 Eastern Beach is aesthetically significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates important visual qualities including the cast iron palisade gate, two dressed, smooth finished bluestone piers with pedestals and projecting cornice cappings, and the gold-painted orbs.

The gate at 54 Eastern Beach is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with the substantial residence at 2 Fitzroy Street, prior to the land subdivision in the 1960s. The gate therefore has associations with John Longville Price, original owner of the villa property from 1883-84 and Geelong solicitor and former Mayor. The gate also has associations with Watts and Jackson, architects for the two storey villa and probably the gates.

Overall, the gate at 54 Eastern Beach is of LOCAL significance.
