Statement of Significance
What is significant?
The former Prince of Wales Store, situated at 2 Albert Street, Sebastopol to the extent of the 1860s fabric. The two-storey building is sited on a corner location and has a chamfered central bay highlighting the entrance and two main elevations, facing Albert and Rubicon streets, which are finished in a smooth render, while the secondary elevations are brick (overpainted). Below the parapet is a band of raised lettering, which stretches all the way around the two main elevations. It reads 'Redan Prince of Wales Store / Jermyn's / Prince of Wales Store.'
The cantilevered verandah and a single-storey wing on Rubicon Street appear to date from the mid-20th century and are not of significance.

The former Redan Prince of Wales store is of historic, aesthetic and architectural significance to the City of Ballarat.
Why is it significant?
The former Redan Prince of Wales store is of historical significance as the earliest surviving two-storey store in Sebastopol, dating from the gold mining era of the town, erected on a prominent corner addressing the main thoroughfare and commercial centre of north Sebastopol. (Criterion A)
The former Redan Prince of Wales store is of aesthetic significance as a local landmark, by virtue of its prominent corner location and height, which provides a visual gateway to Sebastopol from the north. (Criterion E)
