C Listed - Local Significance STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE Itself a renovation, it possesses the scale and some of the ornament of its construction date but, given the 1889 renovation and ad-hoc changes this century, little of the building's precise physical form has survived from any one period of construction. Nevertheless its general architectural character represents both periods and its corner siting is also symbolic of typical 1850s hotel construction. Historically, it has performed a social role as an hotel, coffee palace, flats and boarding house for over 136 years. 4 Bellarine Street: Architecturally, it is simple and indicative of early house architecture, although among Geelong's examples it is one of the few houses from the 1850s built of masonry and of two-storeys - most being timber and one-storey. Historically, it is linked with prominent early Geelong residents such as Carver.
