STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

11 Balliang Street has architectural and historic significance at a local level. The building is a representative and substantially intact example of a Victorian residence, a housing type once common in The Geelong region. The building retains its characteristic form, siting and typical Victorian details. It forms a pair with the adjacent building at 13 Balliang Street. It had historical associations with the Irwin family for a period of approximately forty years.

This substantially intact Victorian residence with timber skillion at the rear, has a symmetrical facade constructed of weatherboard cladding. The corrugated iron roof is hipped with a hipped convex verandah featuring simple timber posts. The windows are typical Victorian double hung sash openings with projecting sills. The central entrance has a typical highlight and is hidden by a security door. The verandah is concrete but would have originally been timber. A tall brick corbelled chimney protrudes from the roof. The fence at the front of the site is timber and of considerable age. The building is very similar in form and detail to the adjacent structure at 13 Balliang Street, and forms part of the residential streetscape.
