STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The house at 19 Anderson Street, Geelong, has significance as a relatively intact example of the interwar Californian Bungalow style. This house was built in 1935 for a Mr P.J. Millar.

The house at 19 Anderson Street is architecturally significant at a LOCAL level. It demonstrates original design qualities of an interwar Californian Bungalow style. These qualities include the gable roof form that traverses the site, together with minor gables (including a verandah gable) that project at the front and rear. Other intact or appropriate qualities include the asymmetrical composition, single storey height, horizontal weatherboard wall cladding, rendered brick chimney with a stepped top, wide eaves, projecting bowed bay window at the front with a bank of timber framed double hung windows and timber shingling base walls, other timber framed double hung windows, window leadlighting in the upper sashes, recessed timber framed front entrance doorway, painted brick verandah piers with stuccoed incised rectangular panels and exposed patterned brickwork, solid painted brick verandah balustrade with an incised stuccoed rectangular panel (but not overpainting) and concrete cappings, gable brackets, and gable infill (battening and panelling, and timber shingling). The front timber post and rail and woven wire fence, scrolled metal gate, and front garden (including the winding concrete path) also contribute to the significance of the place.

The house at 19 Anderson Street is historically significant at a LOCAL level. It is associated with residential developments in Geelong during the interwar (1920s-1940s) period. In particular, this house has associations with P.J. Millar, original owner and labourer and motor driver, from 1935.
