The two pairs of two storey maisonettes in the interwar Moderne style
at 1 & 3 Leslie Road and 2 & 4 Sherbourne Street, Essendon
were constructed in 1937 for Mrs. G.S.A. Williams. Alfred O. Dalton of
Collins Street was the architect and the flats were built by Mr. F.W.
Stahle of Mont Albert (The Herald, 25 August 1937, p.16,
'Family flats at Essendon'). These are very intact two storey buildings in the interwar Moderne
style of identiicalconstructed of mottled cream or salmon brick with a
hipped tile roof. Each has a symmetrical facade featuring a projecting
bay with a square parapet and a stepped Art Deco style pylon at its
centre,as well as steel-framed corner windows and a porthole window
below. There are two brick chimneys, and each is complemented by an
original low brick fence
