B Listed - Regional Significance STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE 1 Bendigo Street was once home to the Reverend James Apperley and has been the home of Mr. Gray for most of the twentieth century. It is a rare survivor of the early 1850's vernacular timber architecture in Geelong. The use of second hand materials in the 1850's is particularly interesting as it exemplifies the resourceful way of overcoming the acute shortage of materials caused by the influx of people during the gold rush. It is of regional significance References Kardinia Ward Rate Books 1854, 1854-5, 1855-6, 1859-60, 1860-1. G. Seaton, The Ashby Story - A History of Geelong West, Geelong West Council 1978. W. R.
