Statement of Significance

What is significant?
The house pair at 2-4 Regent Street, Richmond is significant to the extent of the nineteenth century fabric. Built in 1868-9, the two houses are attached Gothic Revival style cottages with bead or chamfer-edge weatherboard cladding, verandahs onto the street and carved gable valences.

Twentieth century alterations and additions to the houses are not significant.

How is it significant?
The house pair at 2-4 Regent Street, Richmond is aesthetically and historically significant to Richmond and the City of Yarra.

Why is it significant?
The house pair at 2-4 Regent Street, Richmond is historically significant (Criterion A & B) for their early date of construction. While there are numerous nineteenth century houses in Richmond few examples from before 1870 survive.

The house pair at 2-4 Regent Street, Richmond is aesthetically significant (Criterion E) for their distinctive early detailing and ornamentation, style, siting and cladding type.
