How is it significant?
Why is it significant?
Bendale, a two storey block of two residential flats at 446 Punt
Road, South Yarra designed by F.L. & K. Klingender and constructed
by 1934 is significant. The significant attribute is the high degree
of external integrity of the building, which retains the original
Streamlined Moderne form and detailing and the unusual Baroque style
buttress.
Bendale is of local architectural and aesthetic significance to
the City of Stonnington.
Architecturally, as an example of a flat design by architect
Frederick Louis Klingender from the end of his career. Klingender was
best known for his Arts & Crafts and Tudor Revival residential
designs, both as part of partnerships Klingender & Alsop and
Klingender & Hamilton, as well as in his final practice with his
son, Keith. Bendale is an unusual example in Klingender's oeuvre of
the Moderne style. Aesthetically, it is distinguished by the striking,
graceful and unexpected addition of a Baroque buttress to the facade.
