Statement of Significance

What is significant?
Bendale, a two storey block of two residential flats at 446 Punt Road, South Yarra designed by F.L. & K. Klingender and constructed by 1934 is significant. The significant attribute is the high degree of external integrity of the building, which retains the original Streamlined Moderne form and detailing and the unusual Baroque style buttress.

Later alterations and additions are not significant.

How is it significant?
Bendale is of local architectural and aesthetic significance to the City of Stonnington.

Why is it significant?
Architecturally, as an example of a flat design by architect Frederick Louis Klingender from the end of his career. Klingender was best known for his Arts & Crafts and Tudor Revival residential designs, both as part of partnerships Klingender & Alsop and Klingender & Hamilton, as well as in his final practice with his son, Keith. Bendale is an unusual example in Klingender's oeuvre of the Moderne style. Aesthetically, it is distinguished by the striking, graceful and unexpected addition of a Baroque buttress to the facade.
