STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The two storey brick villa, formerly known as 'Belvedere', at 25 Virginia Street, Newtown was built for JW Hudson in 1880 to electic design by local Geelong Architect Joseph Watts. The Asymmetrically planned villa with distinctive ground floor bay window and cast iron balcony verandah a characteristic work of Joseph Watts, and representative or architectural traditions in suburban Geelong in the decade 1870-1880. the association with Geelong's publican JW Hudson is of interest.

Death at this residence 'Belvedere' of JW Hudson aged 57 years 28 April 1888.

Joseph Watts also undertook painting and graining work at the National Hotel Moorabool Street Geelong for JW Hudson proprietor tenders being called for in November 1874, and at the adjoining building also owned by JW Hudson in February 1876.
