A Listed - State Significance
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The two storey Victorian gothic style residence 'Hawthorne of 39 Skene Street, Newtown, was erected in 1876 for T C Harwood, a successful Geelong solicitor. Joseph Watts, architect, designed the additions to an earlier cottage erected in 1854 to designs by Snell and Kaweru, architects. This elaborately decorated brick house, with prominent dormer gable windows, bay windows and encircling iron verandah, has most intricate timber looping barge boards as the principal feature. The residence is one of the finest examples of this period in the Geelong region, rivalling the examples of this period in the Geelong region, rivalling the renowned eclecticism of architects, Davidson & Henderson.
