STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The history of the two storey brick house, known as 'Roseberth' since 1919 is tenuously recorded. A five-roomed brick house was present on this site in the 1850's, the present building dating largely from 1889. The verandah probably dates from this time also. It is executed in timber in the Edwardian style with a cast iron infill to the verandah pediment. A substantial house of considerable importance in the high quality residential area of Newtown being erected most probably for Thomas Rix a noted Auctioneer in post gold rush Geelong. The architect is not known.
