STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The Geelong West Post Office in Pakington Street was designed in 1885 by western region architects of the Public Works Department, GBH Austin, as an eclectically derived style which is characteristic of his work. The foundation stone was laid by Graeme Berry, Chief Secretary and the building was completed in 1886. The Post Office exemplifies the innovation and eclectic nature of Public Works Department architecture of the late 1880's in Victoria and has many counterparts throughout Victoria.

The Geelong West Post Office was designed in 1885 by GBH Austin of the Public Works Department. It is a good example of the eclectically derived style which was characteristic of his work. The foundation stone was laid by Graeme Berry, Chief Secretary of Victoria in 1886. It is one of few intact buildings of architectural note in the Pakington Street commercial area.

It is of state significance.
