Statement of Significance

C Listed - Local Significance

A two-storey brick Japanese-influenced Bungalow built in 1913 possibly designed by architect Arthur Purnell. It has architectural significance regionally as a work of the Geelong architect Arthur Purnell who practiced architecture in Shangai and as an interesting variation of the Bungalow style with several unusual characteristics: corner window, chimney caps, mock porte cochere and in particular its extraordinary curved rafters indicative of Japanese influence, one of the only three examples of House known in Victoria. It is historically significant as a representative embodiment of well-to-do family life of the period and its values and aspirations.

CONDITION: Very Good. The roof needs maintenance and there is rising damp in the base bricks.

COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS: 490 Punt Road, south Yarra (1926) AW Parnell's own house 330 Cotham Road, Kew (c1920) CL Greenhill builder's own house are the only other examples of curved rafters in Victoria.
