"Carlyon" (Office)

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

The house known as "Carlyon", 259 Latrobe Terrace, Geelong, dominates its corner site with Little Ryrie Street. The front is bound by an early unpainted red brick and palisade fence. The fence has a brick plinth and piers, which have soldier coursing below concrete cappings. There is also a scrolled metal gate at the corner. The fence is approximately 1500 mm high. Behind the fence is a mature hedge that also extends along the Little Ryrie Street frontage and is approximately 1800 mm high. The asymmetrical, two storey, unpainted red brick, interwar Bungalow styled house is characterised by a gable roof form that traverses the site, together with a two storey hipped roof, single storey gable and single storey flat roof forms that project towards the front. There is also a flat roofed attic window that projects at the front and a rear single storey hipped wing that represents at later addition. Apart from the rear wing and the flat roofs, the bulk of the roof forms are clad in early terra cotta tiles. The flat roofs have battened galvanised cladding while the rear hip has corrugated colorbond cladding. Four early rendered brick chimneys with decorative unpainted brick bands and capped with terra cotta pots. Wide overhangs are features of the eaves. An early feature of the design is the front verandah and projecting flat roofed bay window. Both the verandah and space behind the bay window are supported by rendered brick piers with decorative unpainted brick bands and concrete cappings. The bay window has a bank of early timber framed, leadlighted casements with decorative upper sashes and shingling above. The other timber framed windows are also early, being either casement or double hung, some with leadlighting. Other early decorative features of the design include the timber shingling as gable infill, terra cotta finials, timber gable brackets, masonry window sills and lintels, and the masonry stringcoursing.
