C Listed - Local Significance STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE The Newtown State School, erected in 1877 is a typical Victorian Gothic design school house of the 1870's. The Public works Department architects, under the supervision of H Bastow, designed many buildings of this style in Victoria on the period 1865-1890 and the Newtown State School is a conservative example of the period. The building now somewhat reduced has notable associations with the development of educational institutions in the Geelong area, replacing an earlier denominational school on the nearby site.
