Statement of Significance

SoS from 1998 Heritage Study and 2003 Heritage Review:

Recommended Level of Significance: State

The 'Sunbury Gun' is a rare artillery piece of at least state significance. It is a 3 inch calibre Armstrong 12 Pounder, manufactured in England in 1864. This was the first wrought iron type of gun, the first breech loading artillery, and the first rifled gun to be used in the British service. It is a memorial to the Rupertswood Battery of Horse Artillery, established by Sir William Clarke in 1884. It was also one of the type of gun which had been employed in the military encampments on the Rupertswood property during the 1860s and 70s. It was restored by the Army in 1978-80.
