Statement of Significance

Nominator's Statement of Significance: The Hamilton Army reserve depot is of local significance as the centre of volunteer military activities in the area. The Hamilton Drill Hall constructed in 1910/1911 is of local importance as the centre of military activity during the First and Second World wars (Criterion A.4). The Drill Hall and the remnants of the stable footings demonstrate the requirements of volunteer forces in training and the importance of mounted infantry in military activities prior to and during the First World War. (Criterion B.2) The Hamilton Drill Hall is one of only three remaining halls constructed in Victoria between 1901 and 1913 and is a precursor in design to the austerity of the many timber and corrugated iron halls built between 1913 and 1918.
