Statement of Significance

The former Victorian Rifle Range Pavilion, constructed in 1879, embodying an earlier homestead and extended in 1906, is of historic significance at a State level as the oldest and only surviving building on the former Williamstown range. This rifle range was the oldest and largest range in Victoria, and one of the largest in the world, and has associations with important colonial personal ities such as Col. John Templeton, Sir Frederick Sargood, and Col Sir Charles Merett. The range was the venue for many important shooting events and was the only Australian range to stage Olympic Games events, in 1956. With other parts of the Williamstown coastline, the range played an important role in the colony's first defence installations and has close links with the history of both volunteer and paid military forces in Victoria.
