Statement of Significance

What is significant?

The Wallinduc War Memorial is located on a road reserve at the intersection of the Lismore - Pitfield Road and the Berrybank - Wallinduc Road, adjacent to the Wallinduc CFA Shed. The memorial takes the form of a vernacular stone cairn, constructed of approximately twenty highly irregular courses of basalt, situated on concrete plinth. The cairn features two embossed brass plaques that commemorate those soldiers who served in the First and Second World War. The memorial was erected by the Wallinduc community as a tribute to those members of the local community that served and fell in each of the great wars.

How is it significant?

The Wallinduc War Memorial is of historic, social and aesthetic significance to the settlement of Wallinduc and the Golden Plains Shire.

Why is it significant?

The Wallinduc War Memorial is of historic significance for demonstrating the commitment of the Wallinduc community in commemorating, at a local level, some of the most important events in the national history of Australia. The memorial is especially significant as a tribute to the roles of those from the local community who served and died in the great wars.

It is of social significance as the focus of acts of commemoration such as Anzac Day and Remembrance Day, and as a place of homage for the community.

It is of aesthetic significance for its form, style and iconography to express deep meaning and reflection. This significance is enhanced by its setting and location, as well as its materiality, being composed of irregular basalt blocks derived from local repositories.
