Early major engineering works to establish Anthony's Cutting and the approaches to the Djerriwarrh Bridge in 1858-9, enabling a descent down the steep escarpment into Bacchus Marsh, on the Ballarat Road route to the gold fields. The site is oflocal historical significance in demonstrating the effect of government action on development ofthe Bacchus Marsh community and on the route to Ballarat and the gold fields, hence influential on the development ofthis place and others along the route ofthe road and as being a pioneering engineering achievement. It is also oflocal social significance as a landmark, used by the community for orientation.
