This is an intact tunnel 165 ft long, with an associated mullock heap. It was reputedly dug with pick and shovel as an exploration for gold by unemployment relief ('susso') workers in the 1930s. Though no gold was found the work continued in order to receive Government sustenance money. The Railton Tunnel, Stuart Mill is historically, scientifically and socially important at a LOCAL level as a substantially intact example of a depression era project. Overall the Railton Tunnel, Stuart Mill is of LOCAL significance. RECOMMENDED LEVEL OF SIGNIFICANCE: LOCAL
