Statement of Significance

The land on which 'Mooroolbeek was built was originally owned by Mr Nankivell befroe being sold to Mr. Frank Madden. Frank Madden had founded the firm of solicitors Madden & Butler, Melbourne, befroe Madden entered State parliament in 1894. He had built the house in 1884, having designed and drawn the plans for the architect himself. it was the first large house to be built of red bricks and was ahead of its time in terms of comfort and convenience.

Mr Madden became the State representative for the Eastern suburbs, later Booroondara for 24 years. He was Speaker for 13 years and during this time recieved a knighthood. He was considered an expert on constitutional law.

The house was the venue for much entertaining during the time of the Maddens. After Sir Frank's death in 1921, the house was bought by the Free Kindergarten Union of Victoria for the purpose of ateacher training college. The beautifully appointed and decorated house was demolished in 1968.
